2019-07-05: Airbus launches super long range jet

Airbus A321XLR will fly from Europe to the centre of the USA.

Airbus recently announced plans for a super long haul version of the best-selling A321neo at the "Salon aéronautique". The Airbus A321XLR is upgrading the medium-range jet for flights from Europe to the centre of the USA. Available from 2023, it will cover distances of up to 8700 kilometres.

The A321XLR will fly 15 percent further than the previous long-range version A321LR. "Compared to previous aircraft such as the Boeing 757, which typically fly such routes, the A321XLR saves around 30 per cent in fuel and CO2 emissions," said Airbus sales manager Christian Scherer.

Air Lease Corporation, the aircraft financier, was the first client to announce an order for 27 jets of this type and also signed a preliminary contract for 23 normal Airbus A321neo aircraft and 50 smaller A220-300 aircraft.

Airbus boss Guillaume Faury recently made headlines when he said that in principle he sees possibilities for a new aircraft without CO2 emissions. According to Faury this is the "challenge of this century".  However, he didn’t confirm a date and said that the safety in aviation was the top priority.
