Germany maritime: global - smart - green - this is the motto of the 11th National Maritime Conference (NMK) to be held in Friedrichshafen from 22 to 23 May under the auspices of the Federal Government. Around 800 participants from science, business, politics and trade unions will discuss the current challenges and potential of the industry at the summit.
Globalisation, digitalisation and sustainability are at the heart of the various forums. Other main topics are offshore wind energy and the shipbuilding industry. As globalisation and world trade progresses, the importance of trade by sea continues to grow. In Germany, 60 per cent of goods exports and the majority of raw material imports are by sea or waterway. In November 2018, around 2150 of the merchant ships were owned by German shipping companies. This makes them the fifth largest fleet in the world. With a share of 16.4 per cent, the capacity of the container ship fleet (measured by TEU standing containers) is the largest in the world.
