2019-04-19: Seaborne cargo handling on the rise

In 2018, 304.7 million tonnes of goods were loaded in German seaports - an increase of 1.7 per cent.

In 2018, the volume of goods handled by ocean shipping increased by 1.7 per cent compared with the previous year. The Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) announced at the beginning of this week that a total of 304.7 million tonnes of goods were loaded in German seaports. In 2017 the figure was 299.5 million tonnes.

While the volume of goods received from foreign ports rose by 2.0 per cent, shipments to foreign ports increased by 1.8 per cent. Maritime traffic within Germany, on the other hand, the smallest traffic ratio in terms of volume at 8.2 million tonnes, fell by 4.7 per cent. Container handling thus remained at the stable previous year's level of 15.1 million TEU.

China (3.0 million TEU) continues to lead the partner countries in container traffic with German seaports by a clear margin, ahead of the USA (1.4 million TEU) and Russia (0.7 million TEU).
